MN1-2: Can Platelet Availability and Safety be Improved By Using Paid Donors and Pathogen Reduction Technologies?

Oct 21, 2019 8:30am ‐ Oct 21, 2019 10:00am

Description

This session will include 3 presentations. • Platelet safety and availability- • This presentation will review the risks and benefits of PRT for platelets and how it can mitigate concerns regarding platelet safety. It will also review the current logistic constraints of platelet availability to hospitals as well as the difficulty obtaining 100 percent inventory of PRT platelets when desired. Data on aging platelet donor pool will also be discussed. The presentation will also discuss trends in the rates of ad hoc supply acquisition and unfilled orders at reference academic institutions.

• Use of PRT platelets from paid donors - Pro position. • This presentation will review the positive aspects of using paid donors as the source of PRT platelets to mitigate the issues regarding platelet safety and availability. The presentation will include data generated from the plasma fractionation industry regarding the similar risk of positive donor screens with the use of selected paid donor strategies. This discussion will present the evolution of testing technology since paid donation was previously employed in the early 1970s.

• Use of PRT platelets from paid donors - Con position. • This presentation will review the negative aspects of using paid donors as the source of PRT platelets and will instead suggest other methods that can be used to address the issues of platelet safety and availability.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the current and future concerns regarding platelet availability.
  • Understand the potential advantages of using a paid donor pool for PRT platelets on availability and safety.
  • Understand the potential disadvantages of using a paid donor pool for PRT platelets.
