MN1-5: The "Coopetition" Advantage: The Case for Cooperation between Competing Companies

Oct 21, 2019 8:30am ‐ Oct 21, 2019 10:00am

Description

In 2018, three competing organizations: the American Red Cross, Vitalant, and One Blood formed Creative Testing Solutions (CTS) in order to provide high quality and cost effective blood donor testing services to their organizations as well as the blood community. This partnership presents a unique challenge: How do these fierce competitors come together in a cooperative arrangement to realize the benefits of combining testing laboratories? Combining laboratories into one organization will enhance backup capability within the system to ensure continuity of operations. In the coming years, this partnership will increase operational efficiencies by standardizing testing processes and procedures across all six laboratories.

Hear from one of the CEO’s, the Chair of the Board of Directors, and the Legal Counsel during this session to learn how to achieve the coopetition advantage--balancing the seemingly counterintuitive spirits of cooperation and competition.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine how coopetition can change the non-profit landscape.
  • Discuss the anti-trust aspects and other challenges in establishing this independent legal entity.
  • Communicate examples of how this independent board learned to work together yet still compete.
