MN1-9: Evidence-Based Apheresis Treatment Guidelines and ASFA "Choosing Wisely" Best Practice Recommendations

This session will focus on timely topics in Apheresis. Updates made to the 2019 Journal of Clinical Apheresis Special Edition that detail how apheresis can be utilized to manage >80 diseases will be discussed. ASFA’s recently released “Choosing Wisely” list and its importance in promoting apheresis best practices will be presented and the final talk will focus on central venous catheter avoidance (a Choosing Wisely recommendation) with the use of ultrasound-guided venous cannulation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe general principles for use of apheresis in human disease.
  • Describe at least one recommendation from ASFA's Choosing Wisely list.
  • Describe the use and impact of ultrasound guided venous access on facilitating apheresis procedures.
