SN1-10: How to do more with less? Enhancing value & quality of care with fewer resources & other challenges for healthcare professionals (nonphysicians)

Oct 20, 2019 8:30am ‐ Oct 20, 2019 10:00am

Description

Roundtable discussion questions will be posed that address common challenges faced by blood collection centers, transfusion medicine services and cell therapy services. This is an active, participation session providing an opportunity to learn from colleagues and to gather take home messages and ideas. There are two simultaneous sessions in adjacent rooms, one for physicians and one for healthcare professionals including technologists, managers, supervisors, transfusion safety officers, nurses, executives and other personnel. Each table will have about 20 minutes to discuss and answer one question. Then each table will present their top response to the entire room. These responses will be concurrently captured by the session faculty and we encourage participants to capture relevant comments for consideration within their organization. The two concomitant sessions will address the same questions. Following the Annual Meeting, the responses will be collated and shared with the greater AABB membership.

Example questions:

  • What successful strategies does your institution implement during times of shortages?
  • How do you propose, test, initiate and manage new innovations/new ideas in our current era of lean operational conditions?
  • What strategies have you successfully deployed that are effective for continuing to provide high quality and safe services despite human resource (work force) limitations?
  • What strategies and/or practices are being successfully employed at your affiliation to address employee wellness and resilience?
  • What do you envision is the role of the Transfusion/Infusion Committee (TIC)? What alternatives to a formal TIC might be practical and effective to meet the assessment requirements?

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe common challenges faced by services.
  • Cite actions taken by other services when challenges arise.
  • Recommend possible resolutions to common challenges faced by services.
