Elizabeth Allen, MD, is a board-certified pathologist who specializes in transfusion medicine, a subspecialty of pathology, encompassing blood donation, transfusion practices, stem cell collections and cellular therapy.

Her consultative services focus on providing interpretations of complex blood bank testing and participating in the management of patients with special transfusion needs, such as red cell antibodies or platelet refractoriness. As associate medical director of transfusion medicine, Dr. Allen is involved in running the blood bank and in helping to ensure that UC San Diego Health’s practices conform to the highest standard of care.

Her research focuses on understanding immunohematologic complications in patients with sickle cell disease.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, she was a fellow in blood banking and transfusion medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. She completed residency training in clinical pathology at UC Irvine and earned her medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Allen is board-certified in clinical pathology.

She is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks, the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
