Summarize how Blood Bank software interacts with other clinical systems e.g. interface considerations

Description: Information technology (IT) has always been a vital part of Transfusion Medicine. With the Affordable Care Act and the meaningful use of technology, Blood Bank (BB) software has become more noticeable to health care facilities at large. Transfusion Medicine Directors and Managers are tasked with the implementation of Blood Bank (BB) software and the effective integration with other applicable systems (i.e. LIS, CIS). There is also considerable focus on the use of IT to expedite Patient Blood Management. The Blood Bank is often asked to provide data that will facilitate utilization review of product transfusion. Physician order entry (POE) can be used with clinical decision support, to encourage optimal transfusion practices, such as product ordering and blood administration.

With this in mind, most doctors and medical technologists do not have the experience or background to deal with these responsibilities. In this session, the speakers will (a) Provide general insight on how to implement and validate Blood Bank Software (b) Explore interface considerations with the Laboratory Information System as well as the Clinical Information System (c) Examine Blood Bank informatics in reference to Patient Blood Management.
