Program Description
Blood product shortages may often occur in association with holidays, severe weather, or other events that may temporarily impact blood collections. In this program, the faculty will review the role of Patient Blood Management as a strategy to mitigate the impact of low product inventories during times of blood product shortage, including both from the hospital and the blood collection center perspectives. The speakers will also recommend measures to address unexpected changes in inventory both short-term predictable and longer-term unanticipated (e.g., pandemic, disasters).

Learning Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

Describe how a blood center utilizes patient blood management when the blood supply falls below predefined levels.
Report how a hospital transfusion service utilizes patient blood management when the blood supply falls below predefined levels.
Recommend measures to address unexpected changes in inventory from both short-term predictable and longer-term unanticipated (e.g., pandemic, disasters) causes.
