Learning Objectives:

List two observed workplace behaviors that might present as ethical dilemmas
Identify steps that managers and supervisors can take to distinguish between employee relations (human resources) and true ethical issues.

Description: Organizations have clearly published policies governing human resources, cGMP/cGLP, safety, medicolegal, or ethical standards. These policies define unacceptable behaviors and prescribe procedures for dealing with obvious ethical violations. In the day-to-day world of interpersonal relations, however, employees and managers may encounter behaviors that may appear unethical or non-compliant with quality standards, but can actually be HR conflicts, such as using work time and computer/smartphone to surf the web, play games, or using language among close-knit workers that would be offensive to another employee. This session will explore the emotionally charged and confusing landscape of workplace human behavior, presenting a framework for distinguishing between ethical and management problems. Participants will be given an opportunity to share how they would approach various scenarios.
