Toby Simon MD

Dr. Toby L. Simon began a new career as a consultant in the field of plasma-derived therapies in January 2024, after he retired as senior medical director from global biopharmaceutical firm CSL where over a period of 17 years he held positions in medical direction of CSL Plasma and research and development. During his tenure he was principal investigator in clinical trials for new assays for plasma donation screening and a new plasma collection device and co-authored papers in the areas of pharmacovigilance and both donor and product safety. He was active in PPTA, serving as a co-investigator on industry donor health studies. Prior to joining CSL he was chief medical officer of TriCore Reference Laboratories. Earlier he was active in both the plasma industry and blood banking, holding positions with Serologicals Corporation, Blood Systems, Inc., and the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He served terms as president of the Southcentral Association of Blood Banks, AABB, and America's Blood Centers. Dr. Simon was the industry representative on the FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee from 2000-2002 and 2012-2016. He was a member of the American Board of Pathology Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Test Development and Advisory Committee from 1988-2015 and is a past recipient of the NIH Transfusion Medicine Academic Award and the Robert W. Reilly Leadership Award from PPTA. He was an editor of six editions of the medical textbook, Rossi's Principles of Transfusion Medicine and has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and multiple book chapters, editorials, and other published articles. He received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis followed by specialty training in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital and hematology and transfusion medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and blood banking/transfusion medicine.
