The Blood Bank Guy Essentials Podcast is designed to focus on teaching the essentials of Transfusion Medicine. This educational session will be in a "live interview style" with audience participation, similar to a live podcast recording experience. The interviews, with previous podcast guests Sue Johnson and Dr. Meghan Delaney, will cover foundational topics in immunohematology and blood transfusion practice. Attendees will learn critical skills to allow for a more focused antibody identification process and hear practical tips for dealing with challenging situations of "borderline" platelet and plasma requests and CMV-safe products in the transfusion service. The focus is on learning, in a relaxed, fun setting, with opportunities for the audience to share their thoughts and experiences with the panel.
Learning Objectives:
Identify common patterns of reactivity on antibody identification panels and determine appropriate "next steps"
Explain why the direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and autocontrol do not always give the same results
Discuss strategies for management of "borderline" requests for platelets or plasma, especially in times of limited inventory
Compare approaches for limiting exposure of vulnerable patients to Cytomegalovirus (CMV) in donor blood
