The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted transfusion services and the blood supply globally. Low and middle-income countries (LMICs) had already been experiencing blood supply deficits preceding the pandemic, and these were aggravated by the pandemic. We conducted an extensive cross-sectional global survey on the blood availability and service challenges experienced in LMICs, as well as surveying adaptations/innovations implemented in transfusion services during the pandemic. The decline in blood supplies severely impacted facilities that collect and transfuse blood in LMICs. Adaptive and innovative measures included swift development of protocols to collect convalescent plasma, and proactive outreach to other transfusion programs for assistance and collaboration. One talk in this session will describe the development and results of this survey of 31 responding countries. A second talk will propose strategies for strengthening transfusion services in LMICs for future pandemics and disasters.

All relevant financial relationships have been mitigated.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the development and implementation of an extensive survey on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on blood availability and transfusion practices in low and middle-income countries
  • Discuss in some detail the results of this survey.
  • Propose strategies for strengthening of transfusion services in LMICs for future pandemics and disasters.
