Award Citation: In recognition of his critical, field-advancing research throughout his extraordinary career. Among Dr. Busch’s many accomplishments, his work has been vital in improving our understanding of viral and serological markers, as well as the infectivity of blood transfusions. His research played a significant role in helping the field to further develop strategies to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections, thus improving the safety of blood transfusion and biotherapies worldwide.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how large studies of blood donors and recipients have evolved over the past 40 years to quantify and reduce risks of transfusion-transmitted infections and to respond to emerging infectious diseases that may be threats to blood safety
  • Explain how “big-data” studies using blood donor samples are contributing to public health surveillance and epidemiologic insights into infectious diseases
  • Illustrate how U.S. and international studies of donor-recipient vein-to-vein databases with linkage to repositories and disease registries are advancing the goal of Precision Transfusion Medicine" Michael P. Busch, MD, PhD

AM24-SN-14-O: Blood Donation, Race and Transfusion Medicine: Looking Back to Move Forward (Enduring)
Race is a sociopolitical and not biological construct. As such, the use of race-based algorithms and disease associations has caused demonstrable harm such as delayed kidney transplant referral and missed diagnoses. The field of transfusion medicine is not immune…
