Learning Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain rules for hospital coding and billing for blood products and transfusion service testing.
  • Explain the codes and process used to bill for blood products and special requirements.
  • Define an MUE and discuss differences between direct client billing (e.g. reference lab billing a hospital lab) and patient/3rd party billing (e.g. hospital lab billing an insurance company).
  • Identify the proper codes and process for billing phenotyping and genotyping testing for donors and patients.
  • Discuss recent advocacy initiatives aimed at ensuring appropriate payments for blood products and transfusion services.

Program Description: This program will include discussion and case studies to familiarize the audience with the proper CPT and HCPCS code selections for blood bank testing, blood products, and blood administration activities. Speakers will offer their expertise on current payment policies related to serologic and molecular patient and donor testing in support of transfusion therapy.
